Core Principles
1. 95% Data, 5% Code
- UI components, workflows, pages, business logic = JSON
- TypeScript/C++ only handles rendering and persistence
2. Schema-First Development
dbal/shared/api/schema/entities/ # YAML entities (SOURCE OF TRUTH)
schemas/package-schemas/ # JSON validation schemas
3. Multi-Tenant by Default
// EVERY query must filter by tenantId - no exceptions
const records = await db.users.list({ filter: { tenantId } })
4. DBAL > Prisma > Raw SQL
const db = getDBALClient() // Highest - handles ACL, caching
const prisma = getPrismaClient() // Middle - only if DBAL doesn't support
// Raw SQL - never do this
5. One Lambda Per File
src/lib/users/createUser.ts // One function per file
src/lib/users/listUsers.ts // One function per file
6. JSON Script for Business Logic
{
"version": "2.2.0",
"nodes": [
{ "id": "filter", "type": "operation", "op": "filter",
"condition": "{{ $json.status === 'active' }}" }
]
}

Coding Best Practices
Pre-Commit Verification (Mandatory)
From docs/CONTRACT.md - ALL checks must pass:
npm run build # 1. Build Compliance
npm run typecheck # 2. Type Safety (0 errors)
npm run lint # 3. Code Quality
npm run test:e2e # 4. E2E Tests
Code Quality Rules
| Rule | Correct | Wrong |
|---|---|---|
| One lambda per file | createUser.ts with single function |
Multiple functions in one file |
| No @ts-ignore | Fix type errors properly | Suppress with @ts-ignore |
| No implicit any | Concrete types for all values | Untyped variables |
| No dead code | All code is executed | Unused functions/variables |
| Self-documenting | Clear variable/function names | Cryptic abbreviations |
| JSDoc on public APIs | Document function signatures | Missing documentation |
UI/Styling Standards
From .github/copilot-instructions.md:
// ❌ NEVER use Radix UI or Tailwind
import { Dialog } from '@radix-ui/react-dialog'
<button className="bg-blue-500">Click</button>
// ✅ ALWAYS use Material-UI
import { Dialog, Button } from '@mui/material'
<Button variant="contained">Click</Button>
<Box sx={{ display: 'flex', gap: 2 }}>Content</Box>
Component Mapping: Radix Dialog → MUI Dialog, Radix Select → MUI Select, Tailwind → MUI sx prop or SCSS modules
Testing Standards
// Parameterized tests for all functions
it.each([
{ input: 'case1', expected: 'result1' },
{ input: 'case2', expected: 'result2' },
])('should handle $input', ({ input, expected }) => {
expect(myFunction(input)).toBe(expected)
})
- Test files next to source:
utils.ts+utils.test.ts - Run
npm run test:coverage:reportto auto-generate coverage markdown - All functions need test coverage
Security Checklist
From .github/PULL_REQUEST_TEMPLATE.md:
- Input validation implemented
- No XSS vulnerabilities (no innerHTML with user data)
- No SQL injection (use DBAL, not raw queries)
- Passwords hashed with SHA-512
- No secrets committed to code
- Multi-tenant safety verified (tenantId filtering)
PR Best Practices
From .github/workflows/README.md:
- Descriptive titles - Used for automatic labeling
- Link issues - Enables automatic issue closing
- Keep PRs small - Easier to review and merge
- No console.log - Will be flagged in review
- No debugger statements - Treated as blocking issues
- Test locally - Run lint and tests before pushing
Declarative-First Development
// ❌ Hardcoded component
<UserForm user={user} onSave={handleSave} />
// ✅ Declarative from JSON
<RenderComponent component={{
type: 'form',
props: { schema: formSchema },
children: [/* field components */]
}} />
Questions to ask before coding:
- Could this be JSON configuration instead of TypeScript?
- Could a generic renderer handle this instead of custom TSX?
- Is this filtering by tenantId?
- Does this follow one-lambda-per-file pattern?
Async Data Management with Redux
All async data fetching and mutations are managed through Redux instead of external libraries. This provides a single source of truth, better debugging with Redux DevTools, and eliminates runtime dependencies.
useReduxAsyncData Hook
Drop-in replacement for query libraries. Handles data fetching with automatic caching, retries, and request deduplication.
Signature:
const {
data, // T | undefined - fetched data
isLoading, // boolean - initial load state
error, // Error | null - error if fetch failed
isRefetching, // boolean - true during refetch (data still available)
refetch, // () => Promise<T> - manually refetch
retry // () => Promise<T> - manually retry
} = useReduxAsyncData<T>(
fetchFn: () => Promise<T>,
options?: {
maxRetries?: number // Default: 3
retryDelay?: number // Default: 1000ms
refetchOnFocus?: boolean // Default: true
refetchInterval?: number // Default: undefined (no polling)
enabled?: boolean // Default: true
onSuccess?: (data: T) => void
onError?: (error: Error) => void
}
)
Basic Example:
import { useReduxAsyncData } from '@metabuilder/api-clients'
export function UserList() {
const { data: users, isLoading, error, refetch } = useReduxAsyncData(
async () => {
const res = await fetch('/api/users')
if (!res.ok) throw new Error('Failed to fetch')
return res.json()
}
)
if (isLoading) return <div>Loading...</div>
if (error) return <div>Error: {error.message}</div>
return (
<>
<div>{users?.map(u => <div key={u.id}>{u.name}</div>)}</div>
<button onClick={() => refetch()}>Refresh</button>
</>
)
}
Advanced Example with Dependencies:
export function UserDetail({ userId }) {
const { data: user, isRefetching } = useReduxAsyncData(
async () => {
const res = await fetch(`/api/users/${userId}`)
return res.json()
},
{
refetchOnFocus: true,
refetchInterval: 5000, // Poll every 5 seconds
onSuccess: (user) => console.log('User loaded:', user.name),
onError: (error) => console.error('Failed:', error)
}
)
return <div>{user?.name} {isRefetching && '(updating...)'}</div>
}
Pagination Support:
const { data: page, hasNextPage, fetchNext } = useReduxPaginatedAsyncData(
async (pageNum) => {
const res = await fetch(`/api/posts?page=${pageNum}`)
return res.json()
},
pageSize: 20
)
useReduxMutation Hook
Handles create, update, delete operations with automatic error handling and success/error callbacks.
Signature:
const {
mutate, // (payload: T) => Promise<R> - execute mutation
isLoading, // boolean - mutation in progress
error, // Error | null - error if mutation failed
status, // 'idle' | 'pending' | 'succeeded' | 'failed'
reset // () => void - reset to idle state
} = useReduxMutation<T, R>(
mutationFn: (payload: T) => Promise<R>,
options?: {
onSuccess?: (result: R) => void
onError?: (error: Error) => void
onSettled?: (result?: R, error?: Error) => void
}
)
Basic Example:
import { useReduxMutation } from '@metabuilder/api-clients'
export function CreateUserForm() {
const { mutate, isLoading, error } = useReduxMutation(
async (user: CreateUserInput) => {
const res = await fetch('/api/users', {
method: 'POST',
headers: { 'Content-Type': 'application/json' },
body: JSON.stringify(user)
})
if (!res.ok) throw new Error('Failed to create user')
return res.json()
}
)
const handleSubmit = async (e: React.FormEvent) => {
e.preventDefault()
try {
await mutate({ name: 'John', email: 'john@example.com' })
alert('User created!')
} catch (err) {
alert(`Error: ${err.message}`)
}
}
return (
<form onSubmit={handleSubmit}>
<input type="text" placeholder="Name" required />
<button type="submit" disabled={isLoading}>
{isLoading ? 'Creating...' : 'Create'}
</button>
{error && <div style={{ color: 'red' }}>{error.message}</div>}
</form>
)
}
Advanced Example with Success Callback:
export function UpdateUserForm({ user, onSuccess }) {
const { mutate, status } = useReduxMutation(
async (updates: Partial<User>) => {
const res = await fetch(`/api/users/${user.id}`, {
method: 'PUT',
body: JSON.stringify(updates)
})
return res.json()
},
{
onSuccess: (updated) => {
onSuccess(updated)
// Can also refresh data automatically here
},
onError: (error) => {
console.error('Update failed:', error)
}
}
)
return (
<button onClick={() => mutate({ name: 'New Name' })} disabled={status === 'pending'}>
{status === 'pending' ? 'Saving...' : 'Save'}
</button>
)
}
Migration from TanStack React Query
No code changes needed - the hooks API is 100% compatible:
| Feature | Old (TanStack) | New (Redux) | Changes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Data fetching | useQuery |
useReduxAsyncData |
Hook name only |
| Mutations | useMutation |
useReduxMutation |
Hook name only |
| Return object | { data, isLoading, error, refetch } |
Same | Same object structure |
| Callbacks | onSuccess, onError |
Same | Same callback signatures |
| Status codes | 'loading' | 'success' | 'error' |
'idle' | 'pending' | 'succeeded' | 'failed' |
Use isLoading instead |
| Pagination | useInfiniteQuery |
useReduxPaginatedAsyncData |
Different hook |
| Cache control | Via QueryClientProvider | Automatic Redux dispatch | No manual config needed |
Find and Replace:
# In most files, just rename the hook
useQuery → useReduxAsyncData
useMutation → useReduxMutation
Redux State Structure
The async data slice stores all requests in a normalized format:
{
asyncData: {
requests: {
[requestId]: {
id: string
status: 'idle' | 'pending' | 'succeeded' | 'failed'
data: unknown
error: null | string
retryCount: number
lastFetched: number
requestTime: number
}
},
mutations: {
[mutationId]: {
// same structure as request
}
}
}
}
Debugging
Redux DevTools Integration:
All async operations appear as Redux actions in Redux DevTools:
- Open Redux DevTools (browser extension)
- Look for
asyncData/fetchAsyncData/pending,fulfilled, orrejectedactions - Inspect the request ID, response data, and error details
- Use time-travel debugging to replay requests
Request Deduplication:
Concurrent requests with the same requestId are automatically deduplicated. This prevents duplicate API calls:
// Both calls fetch once, return same cached data
const { data: users1 } = useReduxAsyncData(() => fetch('/api/users'))
const { data: users2 } = useReduxAsyncData(() => fetch('/api/users'))
Automatic Cleanup:
Requests older than 5 minutes are automatically cleaned up from Redux state to prevent memory leaks. Manual cleanup available:
import { useDispatch } from 'react-redux'
import { cleanupAsyncRequests } from '@metabuilder/redux-slices'
export function MyComponent() {
const dispatch = useDispatch()
useEffect(() => {
return () => {
// Clean up on unmount
dispatch(cleanupAsyncRequests())
}
}, [])
}
Common Patterns
Refetch After Mutation:
const { data: users, refetch: refetchUsers } = useReduxAsyncData(...)

#### Quick Start
Installation (already in workspaces):
```bash
npm install @metabuilder/redux-core
Basic store setup:
import { configureStore } from '@reduxjs/toolkit'
import { coreReducers } from '@metabuilder/redux-core'
const store = configureStore({
reducer: {
...coreReducers, // All core state (auth, project, workflow, etc)
// Add frontend-specific slices (canvas, editor, etc)
}
})
Import Options
Option 1: Everything (recommended for most apps)
import {
authSlice,
projectSlice,
coreReducers,
useAppDispatch,
useAppSelector
} from '@metabuilder/redux-core'
Option 2: Specific exports (for tree-shaking)
// Slices
import { authSlice } from '@metabuilder/redux-core/slices'
// Types
import type { Project, User, Workflow } from '@metabuilder/redux-core/types'
// Hooks
import { useAppDispatch, useAppSelector } from '@metabuilder/redux-core/store'
// Reducer map
import { coreReducers } from '@metabuilder/redux-core'
Store Configuration Examples
Next.js (frontends/nextjs)
import { configureStore } from '@reduxjs/toolkit'
import { coreReducers } from '@metabuilder/redux-core'
import { canvasSlice, editorSlice } from '@metabuilder/redux-slices'
export const store = configureStore({
reducer: {
...coreReducers, // Core: auth, project, workspace, workflow, nodes, asyncData
canvas: canvasSlice.reducer,
editor: editorSlice.reducer,
}
})
Qt6 Desktop (frontends/qt6)
const store = configureStore({
reducer: {
...coreReducers, // Core state for desktop app
// Add Qt6-specific slices
}
})
CLI (frontends/cli)
const store = configureStore({
reducer: {
...coreReducers, // Minimal core state for CLI
}
})
Using Hooks
import { useAppDispatch, useAppSelector } from '@metabuilder/redux-core'
import { setUser, selectUser } from '@metabuilder/redux-core'
export function UserProfile() {
const dispatch = useAppDispatch()
const user = useAppSelector(selectUser)
useEffect(() => {
dispatch(setUser({ id: '123', email: 'user@example.com' }))
}, [])
return <div>{user?.email}</div>
}
Async Data Pattern
import { useAppDispatch, useAppSelector } from '@metabuilder/redux-core'
import { fetchAsyncData, selectAsyncData } from '@metabuilder/redux-core'
export function ProjectsList() {
const dispatch = useAppDispatch()
const { data: projects, loading } = useAppSelector(state =>
selectAsyncData(state, 'projects')
)
useEffect(() => {
dispatch(fetchAsyncData({
requestId: 'projects',
promise: fetch('/api/projects').then(r => r.json())
}))
}, [])
if (loading) return <Spinner />
return <div>{projects?.map(p => <div key={p.id}>{p.name}</div>)}</div>
}
