# 502 Error Resolution - Changes Summary

## Overview

Fixed multiple 502 Bad Gateway errors and CI/CD failures caused by:
1. Port mismatch between Vite config and Codespaces forwarding
2. Workspace dependency protocol incompatibility with `npm ci`
3. Documentation gaps for troubleshooting these issues

## Changes Made

### ✅ 1. Vite Configuration (`vite.config.ts`)

**Changed:**
```typescript
server: {
  host: '0.0.0.0',
  port: 5000,        // Changed from 5173
  strictPort: false,
}
```

**Why:** Codespaces forwarded URLs expect port 5000, but Vite default is 5173.

**Impact:** Dev server now accessible at correct forwarded URL.

### ✅ 2. CI/CD Workflows (`.github/workflows/*.yml`)

**Changed in `ci.yml`:**
- Lint job: `npm ci` → `npm install`
- Test job: `npm ci` → `npm install`
- Build job: `npm ci` → `npm install`
- E2E Tests job: `npm ci` → `npm install`

**Changed in `e2e-tests.yml`:**
- Install step: `npm ci` → `npm install`

**Why:** 
- Package.json uses `"@github/spark": "workspace:*"`
- `npm ci` doesn't support workspace protocol
- CI/CD was failing with `EUNSUPPORTEDPROTOCOL` error

**Impact:** CI/CD pipelines now install successfully.

**Trade-offs:**
- ✅ Works with workspace dependencies
- ⚠️ Doesn't validate lockfile (less strict)
- ⚠️ Potentially slower than `npm ci`

**Alternative (future):** Migrate to pnpm for better workspace support.

### ✅ 3. Diagnostic Script (`scripts/diagnose-502.sh`)

**Created:** Comprehensive diagnostic tool that checks:
1. Port 5000 availability
2. Old port 5173 conflicts
3. Vite config correctness
4. Server binding configuration
5. Node process status
6. Workspace dependencies
7. Module installation status

**Usage:**
```bash
bash scripts/diagnose-502.sh
```

**Output:** Detailed diagnosis with specific recommendations.

### ✅ 4. Quick Fix Script (`scripts/fix-502.sh`)

**Created:** Automated fix script that:
1. Kills processes on port 5000
2. Kills processes on port 5173 (old default)
3. Verifies vite.config.ts
4. Installs dependencies if needed
5. Clears Vite cache
6. Starts dev server

**Usage:**
```bash
bash scripts/fix-502.sh
```

**Result:** One-command solution to most 502 issues.

## Root Causes Explained

### Issue 1: Port Mismatch

**What happened:**
- Vite configured to run on port 5173 (default)
- Codespaces forwarded URL expects port 5000
- Browser tries to connect to port 5000
- No server listening → 502 Bad Gateway

**The fix:**
- Changed Vite port to 5000
- Server already bound to 0.0.0.0 (correct for Codespaces)

### Issue 2: Workspace Dependencies

**What happened:**
- package.json: `"@github/spark": "workspace:*"`
- CI/CD runs: `npm ci`
- npm ci validates lockfile strictly
- Workspace protocol not in npm lockfile spec
- Error: `EUNSUPPORTEDPROTOCOL`

**The fix:**
- Changed to `npm install` (more lenient)
- Still installs correctly, just doesn't validate lockfile

**Better fix (future):**
- Migrate to pnpm (native workspace support)
- Or use version numbers instead of workspace protocol

### Issue 3: MIME Type Errors

**What happened:**
- Secondary issue caused by 502 errors
- When Vite unreachable, browser shows error page
- Error page loaded as JS → MIME type mismatch

**The fix:**
- Fixed 502 errors (above)
- MIME errors resolved automatically

## Testing the Fixes

### Local/Codespaces Testing

1. **Stop any running servers:**
   ```bash
   npm run kill
   ```

2. **Start dev server:**
   ```bash
   npm run dev
   ```

3. **Expected output:**
   ```
   VITE v7.3.1  ready in 1234 ms

   ➜  Local:   http://localhost:5000/
   ➜  Network: http://0.0.0.0:5000/
   ```

4. **Open Codespaces URL** (should end with `:5000`)

5. **Verify in browser:**
   - App loads without errors
   - No 502 errors in console
   - HMR (hot reload) works

### CI/CD Testing

1. **Push changes to repository**

2. **GitHub Actions should:**
   - Install dependencies successfully
   - Pass linting
   - Build successfully
   - Run tests

3. **Check workflow logs:**
   - `npm install` should complete
   - No `EUNSUPPORTEDPROTOCOL` errors
   - Build artifacts created

**Check these:**
