Phase 5.4: Accessibility & Performance Optimization - Kickstart Guide

Status: DOCUMENTATION COMPLETE - READY FOR IMPLEMENTATION Date: January 21, 2026 Objective: Achieve WCAG AA compliance and optimize Core Web Vitals for MVP launch

Quick Start (5 Minutes)

What is Phase 5.4?

Phase 5.4 focuses on preparing MetaBuilder for public MVP launch by:

  1. Achieving WCAG AA accessibility compliance - Inclusive design for all users
  2. Optimizing Core Web Vitals - Performance for excellent user experience
  3. Comprehensive testing - Cross-browser, responsive, E2E test coverage
  4. Security & deployment readiness - Production-ready infrastructure

Why This Matters

  • Accessibility: 1 in 4 adults have disabilities. WCAG AA is the industry standard.
  • Performance: 50% of users abandon sites that take >3s to load.
  • Business: Better accessibility + performance = higher conversion, lower churn.
  • Legal: WCAG AA compliance reduces legal risk in many jurisdictions.

Success Criteria

Metric Target Status
Accessibility: WCAG AA 100% compliance 100% To Implement
Performance: LCP <2.5s, FID <100ms, CLS <0.1 All To Measure
Testing: E2E pass rate >90% 90%+ 59% → 90%+
Build: <5s compile, <2 MB bundle <5s, <2 MB 2.3s, 1.0 MB

Four-Week Implementation Plan

Week 1: Accessibility Foundation

Objective: Implement WCAG AA core requirements

Daily Tasks:

  • Day 1: ARIA labels on all interactive elements
  • Day 2: Semantic HTML structure review + fixes
  • Day 3: Keyboard navigation full implementation

  • Day 5: Form labels and error message patterns

Deliverables:

  • All ARIA labels implemented
  • Semantic HTML on 100% of pages
  • Keyboard navigation working on 100% of components
  • Focus indicators visible on all interactive elements
  • All forms properly labeled

Key Implementation Patterns

Pattern 1: ARIA Labels

// ✅ CORRECT
<button aria-label="Delete user">
  <TrashIcon aria-hidden="true" />
</button>

// ✅ GOOD
<button onClick={handleDelete}>Delete</button>

Pattern 2: Form Validation

// ✅ CORRECT
<label htmlFor="email">Email <span aria-label="required">*</span></label>
<input
  id="email"
  aria-required="true"
  aria-describedby={error ? 'error-email' : undefined}
  aria-invalid={!!error}
/>
{error && (
  <div id="error-email" role="alert">
    {error}
  </div>
)}

Pattern 3: Dynamic Import

// ✅ CORRECT - Lazy load admin tools
import dynamic from 'next/dynamic'
const DatabaseManager = dynamic(
  () => import('@/components/admin/DatabaseManager'),
  { loading: () => <LoadingSkeleton /> }
)

Pattern 4: Focus Indicators

/* ✅ CORRECT */
button:focus-visible {
  outline: 2px solid #0066cc;
  outline-offset: 2px;
}

Common Challenges & Solutions

Challenge 1: Keyboard Navigation

Problem: Interactive elements not reachable by Tab key Solution: Ensure tabIndex is only used when necessary, semantic HTML first Time to Fix: 2-4 hours per component

Challenge 2: Focus Indicators

Problem: Focus outline removed or not visible Solution: Always provide visible focus state using :focus-visible or custom styling Time to Fix: 1-2 hours

Challenge 3: Test Failures

Problem: Pagination tests timeout, auth tests fail Solution: Review selectors, add waits, improve data setup Time to Fix: 1-2 hours per test category

Challenge 4: Color Contrast

Problem: Text doesn't meet 4.5:1 ratio Solution: Use WebAIM tool to verify, adjust colors as needed Time to Fix: 30 minutes per issue
